Hard things are hard

Yes…I know…Quite the hot take. 🌶️

This time of year, it feels like a reminder is in order.

It doesn’t matter if you have

🗓️The perfect productivity system.

🏋️The perfect workout program.

💰The perfect financial plan.

Success in any of those domains is still going to be hard. 🪨

Systems are helpful, maybe even necessary to accomplish our goals. But it worries me when I see systems sold on the pretense that they will make hard things easy. Like if you were doing it right it wouldn’t be so hard.

We often want things to be easy.

We feel like we are doing something wrong when things are hard for us and others tell us it’s easy for them.

Easy is a lie. 🤬

This is why discipline is a foundational skill. Discipline keeps us to our systems when things get difficult as they inevitably will. 🧗‍♀️

Luckily, discipline is extremely transferable between domains. If you’re disciplined in one area, you know how to be disciplined in any area.🪜

Some look down on building basic discipline through “making your bed” 🛏️ or “cleaning up your room” 🧹. But if you can do those basic actions consistently, even when you don’t want to, you are well on your way to establishing yourself as a disciplined person.

Hard things are hard.

They require discipline.

Don’t be fooled by easy answers. 🪄

I recently started teaching a 6 week basic ukulele class at a local college. There’s another teacher who offers a one day class called “instant guitar “. He also teaches “instant piano “. My thought is you’ve gotta be kidding! Learning music takes time and practice.
