I fell a little off my five books a month pace this month, but I am still on target for 60 with 10 books left to go in the remainder of 2024. All four of these books were great reads that I recommend. More to come in the deep dive.
Primal Leadership by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, and Annie McKee
This is the book I was looking for when I read Emotional Intelligence last month. Primal Leadership was a much more readable book for me, although I did learn a lot from Emotional Intelligence. Learn how to lead with emotional awareness that reverberates throughout the organization creating waves of positive aftershocks. Understand when and how to use more hard driving styles to maximize their effect and minimize demoralizing and burning out those you lead. Shout out to Clark Masterson for the recommendation.
Nobody Cares About Your Career by Erika Ayers Badan
Many pieces of career advice that I have felt or learned over the years that no one put into writing, until now. You are the only one in charge of your career. The sooner you take ownership of that fact, the sooner you can get to work. You won’t find this advice in standard training materials. You can learn this on your own, but it helps to hear it from someone who has lived, learned, and now shares her wisdom.
They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif Abdurraqib
I don’t recall quite how I came to find this book on my reading list. I was struck by the cover alone. Inside you will find excellent and often poetic writing. Hanif is thoughtful in his words and critiques with a kind heart. Music, culture, race, religion; these essays run the gamut.
The Coming Wave by Mustafa Suleyman
An eye-opening look at all the potential technical advances that all appear to be poised to crash over us in short order. This book will help you understand why this current technical revolution will be so transformative and disruptive to society. The prospect of achieving containment only by walking a narrow path through the fog does not leave me feeling hopeful.
